never lose your dogs illustration

I participated in the Light Grey Art Lab holiday art exchange again last year. I was matched with the wonderfully talented Zara Gonzalez Hoang (check out her work — it’s so great!). She sent me this cute, fun print of a weenie dog dressed for the four seasons. I love it!!

This is the illustration that I made for her:

Zara’s cute corgi, Ziggy was part of my inspiration. The corgi is a stylized version of him (the grey dog is inspired by my dog, Lou).

I had a lot of fun working on this piece — I took more time on it than I usually do on digital illustration. Spending significant time on digital pieces is something I’ve had to make myself do. I tend to lose interest in projects if they don’t evolve into something I like quickly. However, with this project, I wanted to make something special for Zara, so I kept at it.

As far as process goes, I started with a pencil sketch that I scanned, and then built upon that in Photoshop using my Wacom tablet.

The final illustration is pretty similar to the sketch I initially drew.

My process is basically laying out base shapes, and then adding the shading and details to them.

I modeled her boots on some Sorels I saw online. Her leggings were inspired by Athleta gear.

My mom knitted six (!) sweaters for my dogs last fall & winter, so they each have three to choose from. Those were also part of my inspiration for this illustration.
